Treading Water

It’s like treading water that’s rising.
Your eyes, nose and mouth are out.
Just above the level to survive.
You work to create space. Comfort.
The water recedes for a moment.
Shoulder level. Neck is clear.
Then boom. It’s back at your chin.
Threatening to overtake you.
You relaxed for a second. Now look.
Your legs are tired. Shoulders burning.
You either get better or drown.
Relentless. No rest. Never stops.
Just keep kicking. Keep kicking.
